2015 Fundraising – SF Bike Kitchen Needs Your Help!

As you know, we don’t often reach out to our community, but we have an important request that we hope you’ll consider today.

Our workshop in the Mission is a place where anyone can come to work on their bike. It’s also where we keep everything imaginable to help people fix up their rides—bike frames, tools, parts, you name it. Over the past year, as we’ve grown and served more and more San Franciscans, it’s become evident that we need to better protect and care for our resources.

Access and security is essential to the Bike Kitchen’s functionality and safety. Our primary need in 2015 is to secure access to our space to ensure that materials intended for our community stay in our community.

To overhaul our physical access system, we are planning to replace all straight keys with an electronic key fob and pin system (like most apartment complexes). It will be installed by a local San Francisco independent contractor and cost approximately $1,500. We’re looking to install this as soon as we reach our funding goal. If we don’t hit our goal, we will slowly defray the cost from a portion of day use fees until we can purchase this necessary upgrade.

Additionally, in parcel with installing a new physical access system, we plan to inventory and restock tools—which naturally wear and decline through use—and reorganize the shop so that members can reliably find what they need among our discounted, donated parts.

We hope you’ll donate even $5 to helping us secure our space so that we can continue our mission of teaching people of all ages and backgrounds how to repair bicycles
