Announcing our next series of classes.
Please contact info@bikekitchen.org to register.
Register early: class size is very limited.
Our next Tune-Up class will meet for three Mondays in September from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm
The exact dates are September 8th, 15th, and 22nd.
Here are more details about the class:
* It will be limited to 8 people, and will be held at the Bike Kitchen, which is located on Laskie Alley off of Mission St between 8th and 9th.
* Class will be hands-on, so bring a bike and get ready to get greasy. Over the 3 weeks, it will cover what is included in a basic shop tune-up: installing and removing tubes and tires (i.e. fixing a flat), installing brake and shift cables, adjusting brakes and gears, chain maintenance, truing wheels, etc.
* The fee for this class is sliding scale, and is $40-80 for current Bike Kitchen members, or $70-110 for non Bike Kitchen members (although a year-long membership comes with the class).
No previous knowledge about bikes is required or expected. But a willingness to learn and have fun is a must!

YMCA Bicycle Repair Day
The YMCA (www.ymca.org) runs a youth program
dedicated to teaching
kids how to make bikes a healthy part of their daily lives. They go on rides
once a week. The bikes they ride are donated and, naturally, need a little
tune up now and then. The Presidio Y hosted a bike repair day in late January.
Bike Kitchen volunteer Brian Cavagnolo contributed to the planning of the repair
day in late January 2005. The biggest tasks were cleaning and organizing their
workshop, ordering parts and tools, inventorying the fleet, and making work
orders. The Bike Kitchen loaned several bike stands to support the event.
The bike repair day was a hit: about a dozen mechanics showed up and fixed
up about 40 bikes. To learn more about the Presidio YMCA's youth bike
program, call (415) 447-9622.
Earn-a-Bike
Participants are assigned a list of tasks to complete over
the course of several shifts. Once all tasks have been completed
and approved by a mechanic, the participant may choose a bicycle
or a frame and begin building it with parts approved by a
mechanic. Once the bicycle is finished, it must be checked
for safety by a mechanic. This program is free of charge.
Sign up with a mechanic during a shift.
We are currently working towards
offering basic repair classes, as well as more specialized
training in topics such as wheel building and custom frame
painting. Contact us for more information.
