The Bike Kitchen is moving!
The Bike Kitchen has a lot to celebrate this year. Not only is it the community shop's five-year anniversary, but it is also making a big move from its current spot on Laskie Alley in SOMA. This January, the Bike Kitchen will move to the ground floor of Mosaica, an innovative mixed-income and mixed-use housing development at 18th and Alabama.
The Bike Kitchen has long outgrown its 1,000 square-foot space in SOMA. The shop now boasts a membership base of over 500, and on any given shift the shop is buzzing with dozens of patrons and mechanics. The new space at 18th and Alabama will be nearly twice the size and built specifically for the Bike Kitchen's unique teaching environment. The new shop will have increased storage space, more professional-quality bike stands, and additional sets of tools.
A lot of work needs to happen before the Bike Kitchen can complete this exciting move. In addition to the basic construction and design of a new workshop, the Bike Kitchen is also responsible for installing a bathroom, electrical wiring and internal walls. The Bike Kitchen is seeking to raise $50,000 over the next several months.
To celebrate these developments, the Bike Kitchen will be holding a five-year anniversary party and fundraiser at El Rio on Monday, September 29 at 8pm.
